The unmistakable design genius of Archibald Knox comes to the fore in this Liberty box coming to auction in December.
Knox (1864-1933) was born on the Isle of Man. He is best known as being Liberty’s primary designer at the height of their success and influence upon UK and International design. Such was his influence, in Italy Art Nouveau was known as ‘Stile Liberty’.
His work bridged the Arts and Crafts Movement, Celtic Revival, Art Nouveau and Modernism. He is seen as a leading figure of the Modern Style movement.
Knox produced hundreds of designs for Liberty, mostly for the Tudric (pewter) and Cymric (precious metals) ranges. His design talent covered a wide range of objects, both ornamental and utilitarian, and included silverware and pewterware, jewellery, inkwells and ornamental boxes like this one. It will be offered in Hansons’ December 1 Decorative Art Auction with an estimate of £300-£400.
