Back to Bishton! Fine Art auction returns to Staffordshire mansion at Christmas

 |  By andy

Atmospheric Staffordshire mansion Bishton Hall will host Hansons Auctioneers’ Christmas Fine Art Auction thanks to the success of a previous sale at the venue.

The magnificent Georgian property played host to the firm’s Autumn Fine Art Auction, which smashed all sales records to break the £1m barrier and attracted more than 1,000 visitors. The top selling lot was a Thomas Tompion bracket clock, circa 1690, which made £200,000.

Such was the success the venue will now play host to Hansons’ final auction of 2018. The Christmas Fine Art sale will run from December 18-20 at Bishton Hall, Wolseley Bridge, Staffordshire.

Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, said: “We enjoyed a splendid sale at Bishton Hall in October and thought it would be wonderful to revisit this magnificent property. We were are honoured to gain permission to do so.”

Rik Alexander, operations manager at Hansons, said: “There was a time when it was normal to hold auctions at properties. People would follow the auctioneer from room to room as he sold objects.

“This type of sale was killed by the internet but we decided to take the technology with us on location and bring back the tradition thanks to new technology.

“The success of the event shows people still enjoy attending an auction in person, especially when they have the opportunity to browse prospective purchases in an impressive period property. People love the drama and atmosphere of a traditional country house location.”

Though the bulk of the contents of Bishton Hall were sold in Hansons’ October auction, there will be some items from the property in the Christmas sale, including the contents of its cellar where some bottles of century-old port and champagne have been unearthed.

The sale will also include jewellery, watches and silver, paintings, fine furniture and the Library Auction.

Hansons’ Christmas Fine Art Auction will run from December 18-20 at Bishton Hall, Wolseley Bridge, Staffordshire, ST17 0XN, starting at 10.30am each day. Entries invited until November 30. Viewing: December 16, noon-5pm; December 17, 11am-7pm and on sale days from 9am until the auctions begin.
