Antique and vintage jewellery on course to sail to saleroom victory in 2023

 |  By Kendal Cooper

If Hansons had to make an auction prediction for 2023 it would be that all types of jewellery – vintage and antique – will achieve exceptional prices.

In recent years jewellery, silver and gold have soared to ever greater heights in the saleroom. They are seen as a safe investment in turbulent economic times.

In addition, jewellery lovers know auctions offer excellent value for money, not to mention unusal finds, compared to retail outlets. This enhances a vibrant market.

Two lots to tempt them in Hansons’ January 9 Fine Art sale include early 20th century aquamarine and diamond platinum-set drop earrings, estimate £400-£500 (lot 136, above) and a 14ct white gold ring featuring a pear-cut 2.8ct aquamarine within a border of diamonds, size L, £200-£300 (lot 143, below).

Aquamarine, the birth stone for March, merges the Latin words for water (aqua) and ‘of the sea’  (marina) and is connected to the ocean.  Ancient Romans believed aquamarine could protect people travelling across the sea.  It’s  also a symbol of youth and happiness. Its value is determined by its weight, colour, cut and clarity.
