A Stone’s Throw Away: Hanson Richmond Unveils Rare Jade and Carvings in Inaugural Asian Sale

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Hanson Richmond is thrilled to announce their inaugural Asian sale on 28th February 2025, featuring an extraordinary single-owner collection of jade and stone carvings from the 19th century. This captivating selection showcases masterpieces ranging from intricately carved water buffalo and geese to snakes, each a testament to the timeless artistry and cultural significance of Chinese craftsmanship.

Chris Kirkham, head of the sale, shared his excitement: “This collection is truly exceptional. The fact that it includes the original receipts gives buyers, particularly in the Chinese market, the confidence that these pieces were acquired before the mid-1970s—a rare and important detail for collectors.”

Jade, revered in Chinese culture as a symbol of luck, healing, and protection, is the focal point of the sale. It is believed to guard against evil spirits and harmful influences, adding an even deeper layer of significance to these already highly coveted works of art. The remarkable difficulty of carving jade—combined with the intricate designs—makes each piece a masterpiece of craftsmanship and a feat of artistry.

One standout piece in the collection is Lot 1, a water buffalo, a symbol of contemplation in Chinese art. Estimated at £300-500, this stunning piece has captured the heart of Chris Kirkham, who describes it as his favourite from the collection.
