The beauty of period fashion is that it tells a story—each piece carries with it a glimpse into a different era. Auctions like Hansons provide the perfect platform for these items to reach global audiences, allowing them to find new homes where their rich history will be appreciated.
A recent discovery in Derbyshire has unveiled an extraordinary collection of memorabilia from the 1937 Coronation of King George VI, and Hansons is thrilled to present it at the Etwall March Iconic Design Auction on the 28th March 2025. This exceptional collection includes a coronation dress, train, petticoat, headdress, ostrich feather fan, and black silk top hat. Estimated to fetch between £500-£600, these regal items once belonged to a guest at the coronation and offer a fascinating glimpse into a significant moment in British history.

The story behind this collection is as captivating as the items themselves. The ensemble was owned by Lady Gertrude Liddall, the wife of Sir Walter Sydney Liddall, a Conservative Member of Parliament who served from 1931 to 1945. Sir Walter, who received a CBE in 1937 for his political services, attended the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey on the 12th May 1937, alongside his wife. After the event, Lady Gertrude carefully stored her court dress and accessories, where they remained hidden for decades.
Following Lady Gertrude’s passing in 1973, the dress was passed down to her daughter, Sheila. It wasn’t until Sheila’s death in 1987 that the family rediscovered this exceptional piece of history. The granddaughters of Sir Walter and Lady Gertrude, who had preserved the dress for decades, decided to consign it to auction, ensuring the legacy of this royal ensemble would be preserved and shared with future generations.

The dress itself is a true work of art. Made from white silk satin brocade, it features a ruched cross-over design that gathers at the waist and extends down the gown with paniers. The accompanying accessories—a feather fan and a black silk top hat—add to the regal beauty of the ensemble, making it a stunning reflection of the 1937 coronation.
But this collection is not just about aesthetics. It holds deep historical significance, offering a tangible link to a defining moment in British monarchy history. These items allow us to connect with a pivotal day in British history, and they serve as a lasting tribute to the coronation of George VI.
Under the guidance of historical fashion expert Notty Hornblower, the family entrusted Hansons to auction these items, knowing they would find a home where their historical value would be respected. Notty’s expertise in historical fashion has been instrumental in preserving this legacy.
As the auction date approaches, Hansons invites all those with an appreciation for vintage fashion and royal history to take this rare opportunity to own a piece of the past. This iconic collection, which includes the coronation dress and its accessories, offers a unique chance to acquire a piece of history that has endured for nearly 90 years.
