We love to see old postcards at Hansons and this one really took our breath away. Can you see why?
It’s from celebrated English writer and poet D H Lawrence who was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, in 1885.
He posted it to friend, Nellie Holderness, who lived at Eakring, near Newark. The postcard features Old School House and Rock Cottages, Shirebrook, and D H Lawrence was not impressed with north Derbyshire. He wrote: ‘I have got here but had to bike – not a single train. Shirebrook is a hideous place – I contrast it with Eakring’.
We gather from the vendor that Nellie knew Lawrence well as they were at teaching training college together.
Lawrence, who died aged only 44 in 1930, is best known for his novels Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love and Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
The postcard has not received an estimate yet but is likely to be worth hundreds of pounds. It will be sold in our Summer Fine Arts Library Auction.
