Rare Chinese candlestick sparks global bidding war in Derby

 |  By Kirsty Myatt

A rare Chinese blue-and-white porcelain altar candlestick dramatically exceeded expectations when it sold for £4,000 beating its £1,000 estimate after fierce global bidding.

Measuring 23.5cm (10in) in height, its significance was spotted by Antiques Roadshow and Asian art specialist Adam Schoon at a routine valuation in Derby.

While the base of the candlestick had the four-character Yongzheng mark – dating it to 1723–1735 – it was actually made in the early 19th century, a time when potters were emulating pieces from earlier eras.

Charles Hanson said: “Despite the age discrepancy, these revivalist pieces remain highly prized among collectors for their exceptional craftsmanship.

“Consequently this example, with its balanced proportions and finely painted decoration, drew strong specialist interest.”

During the Yongzheng period in the 18th century, objects like this would were associated with the scholar’s studio or domestic altar.

For the Chinese, the scholar’s table was more than a place of study – it was a carefully curated environment reflecting its owner’s intellect, taste and even spirituality.

Although dating to the early 19th century, the candlestick had the four-character Yongzhengmark (1723–1735)
An altar candlestick was an essential component of the well-curated Chinese scholar’s table, with every piece designed to reflect the owner’s taste and spirituality

Brush pots, incense burners and altar wares were arranged to create an atmosphere of contemplation and harmony.

Charles Hanson continued: “Altar candlesticks like this were used to frame incense burners or devotional objects, while also serving as prized displays of artistic sophistication.”

The candlestick included depictions of the Eight Treasures of Buddhism, each symbol associated with prosperity, spiritual blessing, wisdom and harmony.

The eight are made up of a double lozenge, coin, rhinoceros’ horn, artemisia leaf, mirror, book, musical stone and a flaming pearl – the final symbol linked to spiritual power and enlightenment.

The Qing dynasty was the last imperial dynasty of China, ruling from 1644 to 1912.

Within it, emperors ruled in distinct periods, known as reign periods, with the

Kangxi (1661–1722); Yongzheng (1723–1735) and Qianlong (1736–1795) representing the

golden age of Qing porcelain production.

Charles continued: “The Yongzheng emperor, in particular, became associated with

elegance, refinement and beautifully balanced forms which is why pieces from his reign were emulated and remain in great demand today.”
