Fighting spirit – dozens of “SAS” bottles to go under the hammer

 |  By Kirsty Myatt

More than 40 bottles of wine and spirits commissioned by the 22nd Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment could spark a bidding war at auction.

The haul which includes rare bottles of whisky, gin, rum and port– each bearing the famous winged dagger logo – was given to the vendor over the last decade by members of the SAS.

The collection goes under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers’ specialist wine, whisky and spirits sale at its Etwall saleroom, near Derby, on March 24.

Since it was formed in 1941 the 22nd Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment has commissioned exclusive, private-bottled spirits for its members, often used as commemorative items.

Hansons Auctioneers’ head of wines and spirits, Stuart Palmer, said: “Regimental spirits like these are part of long-standing British military tradition. They were used at officers’ mess dinners or regimental anniversaries or as gifts to visiting dignitaries.”

Each has a special label, or case, with engravings and the motto “Who Dares Wins.”

Because none of the 23 bottles of spirits and 12 bottles of wine, were released on the open market, they are highly sought after by collectors and those with links to the famous regiment.

Stuart Palmer continued: “This is a great collection, all the more so special because each of the bottles was part of a limited-edition issue, produced in small numbers for members of the regiment, and not a general commercial release.

“This collection will appeal not just to spirit aficionados but militaria collectors because of its connection to the most famous regiment in the world adding to its historic and collectable appeal.

“In short, these aren’t just bottles of sprits, they are commemorative items with a direct link to one of the world’s greatest military units.”

Highlights from the collection include Glenmorangie 18 year old, commissioned by the 22nd Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment, which is expected to make £60-£100

Another bottle, this one of gin, was commissioned in 2021 to mark the 80th anniversary of the SAS in 1941.

The limited-edition release, produced by the Pilgrim Spirit Company, is number 1,113 of the 1,941 produced – it has an estimate of £20-£35 at the sale.

A Pol Roger NV Brut Reserve Champagne, also commissioned by the 22nd Special Air Service Regiment, has a guide price of £25-£45.
