A bronze statue of Liverpudlian funnyman Ken Dodd was among the treasures discovered by TV royalty Eric Knowles at a recent drop-in valuation day.
The session, at Hansons’ Etwall saleroom, also saw the discovery of a rare plate by well-known ceramicist Clarice Cliff and an antique Doulton Lambeth vase.
Recognised expert Eric Knowles is a well-known face in the world of antiques, as well as being a regular on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow and Bargain Hunt.
He said: “We had a terrific day and it was great to meet all those people who came along. It proofed what I always say that everyone has a treasure in their homes just waiting to be discovered.”
One of the most notable was a bronze sculpture of the English comedian Sir Ken Dodd, created by the Barnsley sculptor Graham Ibbeson.
The sculpture is a bust of Ken Dodd holding his signature “tickling stick”.
A smaller figure of his Diddy Man character, wearing a top hat, is also part of the sculpture.
Eric continued: “The sculpture was commissioned by Lady Anne Dodd, Ken’s widow. She had met the sculptor when Ken Dodd himself was unveiling Ibbeson’s sculpture of Laurel and Hardy in 2010. For anyone who likes a laugh, it is impossible not to smile when you look at it.”
Eric’s visit was the first of an expanded series of free valuations at the saleroom.
Charles Hanson said: “It was wonderful to see my great Bargain Hunt pal Eric host our recent free valuation at our Etwall saleroom.
“When it comes to ceramics and glassware there is no one in the industry that can hold a candle to him. We hope it will be the start of a greater number of drop-in sessions.”
