TV auctioneer is seeking Scotland’s undiscovered treasures

 |  By Kirsty Myatt

TV auctioneer Charles Hanson is heading to Scotland next month <Nov 17> in search of the country’s undiscovered attic finds.

The star of Bargain Hunt, Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip will be carrying out two valuations in Lockerbie and Moffatt

Charles Hanson said: “This is the first time I have ventured into this great country as a valuer for my own auction house, rather than on the telly, and I cannot wait to unearth some hidden gems.

“From Jacobite glassware to Wemyss ware, Scotland is a country with one of the richest heritages in the world. I’d love to discover some finely chased silver with its own Scottish city assay mark, such as the three castles of Dundee.”

Charles is also the host of a new TV show called Secrets of the Auction House, which sees the 47-year-old and his team discover hidden treasures around the UK.

Based at Hansons Auctioneers’ HQ at Etwall, near Derby, he also runs 11 of his own salerooms across England, stretching from Staffordshire to Cornwall.

Anyone with a treasure in the attic can meet Charles at two free valuations at Lockerbie Town Hall on November 17, from 10am-12.30pm, or Moffat Town Hall from 2.30pm-6pm on the same day.

Charles continued: “But we’re not just looking for local antiques. With the price of gold currently the highest it has been since the 1970s, jewellery tucked away in trinket boxes is currently making huge amounts.

“When people bring in what they think are worthless bits of costume jewellery their jaws drop when I tell them that it could be worth thousands.

“I always say every house has one great valuable squirreled away and nothing gives me more pleasure than unearthing them.”

At one walk-in valuation in Birmingham a blue and white Chinese pot, known to the family simply as “Aunt Beryl’s vase”, went on to sell for £800,000.

Just last week, at Hansons Auctioneers’ Derby saleroom, a cracked vase turned out to be a Ming dynasty treasure which sold for £130,000.
