Cue-pid strikes – Steve Davis’ wedding album could pot £10,000 at auction

 |  By Kirsty Myatt

Six-times world snooker champion Steve Davis’ wedding album could make £10,000 when it goes under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers’ Newark saleroom this Saturday <Oct 4>.

It is part of “deeply personal” archive once owned by the family’s GP and friend who died in 2008.

It came to the present vendor, Derrick Cullen, who runs a martial arts gym in Rochdale, after the doctor died.

Derrick said: “My mum was a friend of Steve Davis’ family doctor who was also a family friend and huge fan.

“I am also a massive snooker follower and after the doctor died in 2008, my mum put me in touch with her family and estate, which is how I came to own it.

“We know she was the family doctor and friend, but more than that is a mystery.”

The seven-album archive includes 300 photographs, many signed, spanning Davis’ illustrious career during the golden age of snooker.

Photos in the archive, dedicated to the mystery medicine woman, referred to as “Dr Gul” are signed “with love from Steve Davis” with kisses.

Hansons Auctioneers’, Carol Morrell, said: “This carefully curated assemblage is far more than a collection of photographs, it captures both Davis’ glittering sporting career and his personal life.

Steve Davis’ wedding album is part of the “deeply personal” archive expected to make £5,000-£10,000 this weekend
Many of the photos are addressed to “Dr Gul” and signed “love from Steve Davis”
The 1990 wedding album is signed by Steve Davis and states “Photographed by Dr Gul”

“Coming from the family doctor, the provenance could not better. This is a lifetime opportunity for collectors, fans, and institutions to acquire a deeply personal record of one of Britain’s most iconic sportsmen.”

The jewel in the archive’s crown is the wedding album from Davis’ marriage to flight attendant, Judith Greig, at St Michael’s Church, Bray near Maidenhead in 1990.

Inside of the wedding album are the words ‘Photographs by Dr Gul’ in gold.

Darren said: “We know she was at the wedding, because when I first got the archive it included flowers from the event.”

Davis was 18 when he first walked into Barry Hearn’s Luciana Snooker Club in Romford. Four years later he was UK champion.

Supported by his loyal following, the Romford Roar, it wasn’t long before he progressed to the world’s stage.

Known as “The Nugget”, he won more professional titles in the sport than any other player, including 28 ranking events and 53 non-rankings, as well as being awarded Sports Personality of the Year in 1988.

The album includes photographs of Davis receiving his OBE at Buckingham Palace in 2000with his sons Greg and Jack. Sadly his marriage to Judy crumbled five years later.

The haul also includes personal letters and cards from the Davis family, press cuttings, caricatures, and memorabilia highlighting his cultural impact and legacy.

Davis, who now works as a commentator and occasional DJ, remains a household name having appeared on a number of TV shows, including I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2013.
