A Lifelong Love of Ceramics: The Alan and Mary Huggins Collections Go to Auction

 |  By Kirsty Myatt

Hansons Auctioneers is proud to present a remarkable selection of British ceramics from the esteemed collections of Alan and Mary Huggins — a testament to decades of passion, discovery, and an enduring love for craftsmanship.

Over the years, the Huggins’ collections have showcased exceptional pieces from iconic British potteries, including Adams, Dudson, Spode, and Wedgwood. Their holdings span a wide variety of classic ceramic forms such as jasperware, stoneware, black basalt, and intricately relief-moulded jugs — the latter inspired in part by Henrywood’s influential work on the subject.

As with many great collections, theirs began with a single piece and grew organically — fuelled by an ever-evolving fascination with certain forms and historic periods. At one stage, the couple developed a keen interest in the diverse range of jug shapes available, building an extensive and visually compelling selection.

Mary Huggins also cultivated a specialist interest in the Art Deco period, focusing on Carlton Ware’s ‘Spangled Tree’ design. Her notable collection was featured in Carlton Times in 2001. She also developed a love for Crown Ducal’s ‘Poppy’, further broadening the scope of their holdings.

Lot 1065

Reflecting on the origins of their passion, Alan Huggins shared a touching personal memory:

“Our interest in Jasperware likely began with a Wedgwood blue jasper biscuit barrel I admired as a child in my grandmother’s home — later passed down to us. Years later, I chose a similar piece as a birthday gift for a lovely young lady. She must have liked it — we’ve now been married for over 65 years.”

Now, due to changing circumstances, the Huggins have made the thoughtful decision to part with part of their cherished collection — offering fellow collectors and enthusiasts the chance to enjoy these timeless pieces.

Highlighted Lots Include:

  • Lot 1123: A Wedgwood tri-colour jasper oval plaque, ‘Friendship Consoling Affliction’, with green rim and pink/puce centre, white relief, late 18th century, impressed WEDGWOOD.
    Estimate: £150–£180
  • Lot 1065: Three graduated Carlton Ware ‘Spangle Tree’ pattern jugs with stylised tree and flower decoration.
    Estimate: £80–£100
  • Lots 1140 & 1141: Wedgwood pink and blue jasperware miniature tea sets, including tea/coffee pot, sugar bowl, milk jug, cup, saucer, tea plate, and tray.
