Beauty comes in many intriguing forms, from the pillars of the great Pantheon temple in Athens to the Amazon Rainforest which shows natural beauty in its element, all the way through to the Mahabodhi temple In India, writes James Brenchley, head of the Antiquities, Ancient Art and Classical Coins Department at Hansons.
As humans, one of our instincts is to capture beauty in different forms. We call this art.
Today, we observe the past and appreciate the thinking and beauty captured in objects created at that time, many of which were designed to honour religious and cultural beliefs.
Antiquities and Ancient Art objects are not just random items, they demand cultural interpretation. The grand Greek Attic pottery vessels were made with such elegance but were not just designed to look pretty but to celebrate important events and honour gods.
