A rare and stunning Rolls-Royce silver radiator desk clock is set to be one of the star lots at Hansons Auctioneers’ 31st January London auction. This exceptional piece, Lot 198, is expected to fetch between £1,000 and £1,500 and is a striking example of craftsmanship, dating back to 1922. With its intricate detailing and fascinating backstory, it is sure to attract the attention of collectors, automobilia enthusiasts, and those with a passion for fine timepieces.

The clock, consigned during Hansons Richmond’s popular weekly valuation day, was crafted by renowned silversmiths Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings in Birmingham in 1922. The clock takes the form of a Rolls-Royce radiator grille, complete with a red enamel badge and a miniature Spirit of Ecstasy mascot perched on top. This iconic mascot, which often goes missing or is damaged in similar models, remains perfectly intact in this example, further enhancing its rarity and desirability.
The timepiece features a hexagonal white enamel dial with Arabic numerals, signed “Lever,” within a silvered circular mount. Although the movement is currently not functioning, the clock’s charm and appeal remain undeniable. The piece is raised upon a stylish ebonised base, standing at 12.7cm in height.
Chris Kirkham, Senior Valuer at Hansons Richmond, remarked, “It’s always a pleasure to see such extraordinary items brought to our weekly valuation days. This Rolls-Royce clock is truly remarkable, particularly because the miniature silver Spirit of Ecstasy mascot is still in place—a rarity in itself. It’s a beautiful example of Rolls-Royce’s craftsmanship and its enduring legacy.”

The clock was likely given as a Christmas gift to Rolls-Royce distributors in 1922, adding an extra layer of historical significance to this already exceptional lot. For those interested in automobilia or classic timepieces, Lot 198 offers a chance to own a rare and meaningful piece of motoring history.
Hansons Richmond provides free home visits for valuations, and its weekly valuation days are held every Wednesday and Friday at their London showroom. These sessions are an ideal opportunity for individuals to discover the value of their treasures or consign items for future auctions.
