Fashionistas looking for something different can discover a wealth of period clothing, lace, unusual textiles and accessories at auction.
Every month, Hansons Auctioneers Hosts a Textiles and Vintage Costume sale, which always sparks strong interest among designers, fashions students and fans of period clothing.
Items are sourced by vintage clothing expert and Hansons’ consultant valuer Notty Hornblower, who owns Hope House Costume Museum in Alstonefield, Derbyshire.
Here, Notty picks out 5 of her favourite items coming up for auction on April 24, 2019, at Hansons, Heage Lane, Etwall, Derbyshire.
Red For Dangerously Chic – Lot 2420
This early 1970s, moss crepe, burnt orange dress by Ossie Clark reprises a 1930s style, thanks to its v-neck, which is gathered round the bust line, and capped sleeves. Though its label says size 12, in the 1970s dress sizes were much smaller than they are today, hence this sizzlingly sexy frock is equivalent to a size 10. Estimate: £90-£120.
Floaty French 70s Florals – Lot 2454
This floaty French Chloe gown/robe dates back to the 1970s and boasts an Oriental floral design. The fabric is black satin with pink floral posies and the cape is lined with a peach, metallic design. It comes with a detachable hood and patch pockets. The design references 1930s style. Estimate £300-£400.
Shimmer In Sequins – Lot 2463
This black sequin Lucien Lelong jacket, with peplum detail, dates back to the late 1930s or early 40s. Lelong was an iconic French designer who made an impact on the fashion world from the 1920s to 1940s. Christian Dior worked for Lelong from 1941-1964. Some repair work has been carried out to the garment. Estimate £200-£300.
Black Velvet Charm – Lot 2473
Ultra-dramatic, this black velvet cape will certainly turn heads. It was made for Blanche Rennell (1917-2001) in 1935 when she went to Newnham College, Cambridge. The cape has a white Arctic fox collar and six sterling silver buttons. Estimate £80-£120.
Chinese Silk Shawl From 1800s – Lot 2460
Quality clothes can survive through the centuries. This silk shawl, in purple with dark cream embroidery (160cm square), is around 140 years old. It was brought back from China by Ernest Rennell (1852-1936) before his marriage in 1882. It has been handed down through the family and carefully stored. Estimate £190-£320.
