Rare black opals offer ultimate Christmas jewellery gift

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Opals as well as diamonds are a girl’s best friend and both emerge in a dazzling Derbyshire auction on December 12.

A stunning early 20th century diamond and opal necklace features two exquisite large black opals.  Black opals, considered rare, have carbon and iron oxide trace elements which cause the unusual darkness of the stone. Thanks to their dark body tone, their rainbow colours stand out much better than in lighter opals.

BID & BROWSE OPAL JEWELLERY

The necklace, lot 69 in Hansons Auctioneers’ December 12 Christmas Fine Art and Decorative Art Auction, has an estimate of £5,000-£6,000. It’s the ultimate festive gift for someone. The oval opal, surrounded by diamonds, measures 22 x 20mm while the suspended, diamond-set bail drop pear opal measures 27 x 19mm. The opals are cabochon stones, meaning they have been shaped and polished rather than faceted.

Opal lovers will also like lot 89, above, an early 20th century opal and diamond set gold brooch. Its claw-set elongated opal boasts an orange, green and blue play of colour within a border of old cut diamonds, £800-£1,200.
