Is this Beswick cat the only one of its kind in the entire world?

 |  By andy

This sleek feline looks like the cat that’s got the cream and for Beswick collectors this animal could prove to be the cream of the crop.

That’s because it may be unique – the only one in the world. Our Beswick valuer Barry Jones is currently making enquiries to verify this crucial fact.

But the signs are already pointing to an extraordinary find. The current Beswick Animals book, the bible for Beswick collectors, lists Beswick pottery and the ‘seated cat’, model 1030. It was made in various colours, including grey, white and ginger, between 1945 and 1973.

However, the book lists a royal blue seated cat as ‘unique’. The shades of Beswick animals are subtly different but this cat does appear to be royal blue. If this proves to be the case, Beswick fans the world over have a special bidding opportunity.

The cat, part of an important collection from a Beswick collector, will be sold in a 20th Century Design and Contemporary Art Auction on July 27, estimate £200-£300. However, if it is the world’s one and only, who knows how high that price could fly.

Join us for free valuations of Beswick, Doulton, Royal Crown Derby and general ceramics at Hansons, Heage Lane, Etwall, every Friday, 10am-4pm.
