Football fans are expected to kick up a fuss over an official match ball from the England v Wales group-stage game at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
However, they’ll need deep pockets. The ball, offered on November 26 in Hansons Auctioneers’ monthly Antiques and Collectors sale, is guided at £5,000-£8,000.
The match, played at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on November 29, 2022, saw England claim a 3-0 victory in a high-stakes showdown between the British rivals.
This type of Al Rihla ball – meaning ‘the journey’ in Arabic – was used for the final. Designed by Adidas, it features a metallic gold base with a triangular pattern made from maroon and burgundy. According to FIFA, the colours were inspired by culture, architecture, boats and flag of Qatar. The football was also created using connected ball technology that delivers real-time data to officials and allows them to track any contact made by players using sensors.
