Hundreds of coins in a phenomenal single-owner collection are destined to achieve tens of thousands of pounds at auction in Derbyshire.
Coins excel in the saleroom as they appeal to both collectors and investors. The latter are keen to take advantage of rising gold and silver prices and acquire tangible assets. They will have the opportunity to do just that thanks to the consignment of a collection of hundreds of gold and silver coins at Hansons Auctioneers’ Etwall saleroom, near Derby.
The collection has been broken down into 150 lots with a combined estimate of more than £40,000. They’re destined to shimmer under the hammer in December.
Cataloguing is still under way but the coins include British and Australian sovereigns, 1937 Commonwealth of Australia Silver Crowns and valuable collectors’ items minted in Canada and South Africa.
To give you some understanding of value, a George V 1911 P sovereign, minted in Perth, Australia, made £345 in Hansons’ September sales. In addition, a scarce Victorian 1838 sovereign, found by a metal detectorist, hammered at £950. Not a bad return for a muddy find dug out of the ground.
