Art and furniture-making are a marriage made in heaven in this dramatic cabinet – a work of art in itself.
It was created thanks to the talents and ingenuity of 17th century European craftsmen and artists who blended their skills to create dramatic pieces of furniture decorated with art.
Not only useful for storage, the cabinet displays elegant period paintings. Plus, its flamboyant attention to detail makes the overall piece striking. Examples like this were a statement of wealth centuries ago. They demonstrated the owner had refined taste and deep pockets as both a cabinetmaker and artist had to be employed to make it.
This Flemish ebony, painted and hardstone mounted cabinet was made in Antwerp in the 17th century. It features oil paintings, a central baroque doorway and is flanked by two banks of drawers with minerals.
Antwerp furniture was in vogue in the first half of the 17th century. Art lovers liked dual-purpose cabinets. As well as being ideal to store medals, coins or jewellery they were akin to a mini art gallery. Instead of hanging paintings on the wall, art could be displayed on furniture.
The cabinet will be guided at £15,000-£25,000 in Hansons Auctioneers’ September 26-27 Fine Art Sale. Further entries invited until September 5.
