We have unearthed some magnificent auction stars in Cheshire but one of the latest ones has really taken our breath away.
A ravishing-in-red traction engine has entered our September 20 Specialist Toys, Diecast, Models and Live Steam Auction with an impressive estimate of £12,000-£15,000.
Believed to be in full working order, the model of a Burrell road locomotive, marked ‘A B Legge & Sons, London’, has taken pride of place in the entrance to our reception – it’s such an impressive sight.
Engines like this capture the magic of Charles Burrell & Sons, a Norfolk company which operated from 1770 to 1928 building steam traction engines, agricultural machinery, steam lorries and steam tram engines.
The first road locomotives started to emerge from the works in the late 1870s with 14 engines specifically designed for the job of road haulage between 1878 and 1890.
Burrell’s history lives on thanks to traction engine models like these. We found this one in Cheadle thanks to our regular valuation events in Wilmslow. When our experts are in Cheshire, they can also carry out free valuations at home for large items or major collections. This engine is 177cm long and 60cm high – a nice size for display but not so easy for transportation.

We’re now gathering items for our Autumn and Christmas Fine Jewellery Watches, Silver and Fine Art Auctions – and among wonderful objects recently discovered are insect brooches.
A 19th century diamond and gold bee brooch, estimate £800-£1,000, and a 19th century butterfly brooch awash with diamonds, blue sapphires, red rubies and a pearl, guide price £5,000-£6,000, will go under the hammer in our October 25 Fine Jewellery Auction. More entries are invited until October 4.
