Farm scene by famous Victorian artist Walter Hunt uncovered in Stoke home

 |  By Kendal Cooper

A painting by renowned British artist Walter Hunt is tipped to spark a bidding war after being discovered in a Staffordshire house.

The quintessentially English farmyard scene featuring cows, a saddled horse, hens and dog was found in Stoke-on-Trent. Walter Hunt paintings are so sought after they can achieve thousands under the hammer, according to Hansons Auctioneers. One of his works, The Dog in the Manger, 1885, is exhibited in London’s Tate Gallery.

Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons, said: “This exciting find is an important painting of note by an artist many collectors admire.  It had been cared for within the family for two or three generations. The animals captured on canvas are magnificent in regards to their positioning, posture, colour and meticulous detail. It’s a classic example of what Walter Hunt (1860-1941) is famous for.

“He was a man of prodigious talent born into a highly artistic family in Victorian England. His father, Charles Hunt, was a painter of genre scenes and his brother, Edgar Hunt, became known for his portraits of chickens, goats and rabbits. Walter is best known for his farmyard scenes, particularly calves, horses and dogs.

“Walter Hunt exhibited his first painting at London’s Royal Academy when he was only 20 years old in 1881. His work became popular among gentlemen farmers at the end of the 19th century. This led to an increase in commissions.

“This find demonstrates Hunt’s skills beautifully. Not only is the scene realistic,  it airs a deep sensitivity in the way it depicts animal expressions and mannerisms.  Capturing the character of animals rather than portraying them as subservient beasts of labour became popular in the late 19th century.

“Hunt became renowned for his work in the Victorian era and, more than a century later, his work remains popular with art connoisseurs. We are thrilled to be handling this important artwork. It deserves to excel.”

The painting, estimate £4,000-£6,000, will be offered in the September 26-27 Derbyshire Fine Art Auction. Further entries invited.
