Two rare pieces of pottery and porcelain – one dating back nearly 300 years – are expected to fetch thousands of pounds in Hansons Auctioneers’ October Fine Art Auction.
Both objects are exceptional and have important historical pedigree, according to Gillian Finney, consultant for Hansons’ Connoisseur Ceramics Department.
She said: “These pieces include a Meissen tea bowl and saucer which date back to the early days of porcelain production in Europe three centuries ago. They were made in circa 1735 and carry an estimate of £3,000 to £5,000.
“In the same Connoisseur Ceramics sale, Hansons is offering a pottery Pearlware horse which is so rare I have only seen a couple of similar examples in more than 40 years of handling high quality ceramics. Due to its rarity its guide price is £12,000-£15,000.
“It’s attributed to the Leeds Pottery Factory and stands on a large oblong base painted with a green sponged effect.”
The Meissen yellow ground tea bowl and saucer feature paintings of a bird perched on a pine branch, prunus and bamboo. It has brown painted rims and gilded foot rims.
Mrs Finney said: “The Meissen Factory was the first manufacturer of European hard-paste porcelain. Its development began in 1708 led by Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus. Production of porcelain in the royal factory at Meissen, near Dresden in Germany, started in 1710 and attracted artists to establish one of the world’s most famous porcelain manufacturers.
“Its signature logo, the blue crossed swords mark, was introduced in 1720, and this piece displays that mark together with a Dreher’s mark for Christian Meynert. Its provenance includes being exhibited at Hamburg Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe from 1999-2009.”
Connoisseur Ceramics are rare pieces of pottery or porcelain of the highest quality which have been fully researched and carry comprehensive provenance.
Gillian Finney and her husband Alan are renowned UK experts in Connoisseur Ceramics. They have run Ceramic Restoration Studios Ltd in Staffordshire since 1979 and Alan has been restoring antique porcelain since 1967.
