Lorna Bailey’s summery pottery wings its way to auction

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Pottery brightens up life and few makers are more colourful in their compositions than Lorna Bailey.

Examples of her ceramics often come to auction and bidders like her striking, vibrant pieces. They are like a dose of summer sunshine. Consequently, two Lorna Bailey ‘Grotesque Bird’ pottery figurines, which have flown into Hansons’ Derbyshire saleroom, are likely to find a cosy nest with a collector.

Lorna, who was was brought up in the Wolstanton area of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire  – close to the Stoke-on-Trent Potteries – has a bold and distinctive style.

After studying at Stoke-on-Trent College she joined her father’s business, LJB Ceramics in Burslem, Stoke. Soon she began designing a series of cottages and trees and abstract patterns based on the pottery of Clarice Cliff, who she has been compared to.

In 1995, when Lorna was only 17, her House and Path and Sunburst patterns went t into full production. She has gone from strength to strength ever since. Today she has her own website and offers commission pieces which wing their way to appreciative destinations all over the world.

Lorna Bailey ceramics will be offered in Hansons’ June 7  Iconic Design Auction. Entries invited until May 16.

To consign pottery, or any antique or collectible, to auction, email [email protected]  or call 01283 733988.
