One of Britain’s best known antiques experts is heading to Newcastle under Lyme to uncover treasures.
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers and a familiar face on TV, will host antique valuation and consignment events at the New Vic Theatre, Etruria Road, on April 23 and June 14, 11am-1pm – and he can’t wait to meet you.
He said: “There’s nothing I enjoy more than chatting to new people, uncovering historical treasures and making fascinating finds. If you have something tucked away at home and you’re curious to know more about it, do come to see me.
“We can unwrap the story and history of your object together and find out if you own an auction star. Many of Hansons’ most important finds are discovered at valuation events like this. It’s a perfect way to find out if you own something of importance and learn what it’s likely to make under the hammer.
“All types of items sell well at auction. There’s a huge global audience of bidders out there keen to snap up everything from ceramics, militaria and music memorabilia to jewellery, gold and coins.
“Auctions are booming and Hansons’ salerooms, which include Bishton Hall in Staffordshire, witness amazing results. This year a scarce 19th century Korean Joseon dynasty helmet soared to £20,500 from a £250-£350 guide. And two original scripts from TV show Friends, found in a bin decades ago, made £17,000. We also saw a Chinese libation cup (Kangxi period, 1662-1722), found in a garage, reach £15,000.
“Designer watches are desirable and a gold, diamond-set Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date watch achieved £11,800. Gold, coins and jewellery consistently excel. For example, a rare 1838 Queen Victoria Coronation 22ct gold medal, designed by Italian coin engraver Benedetto Pistrucci, hammered at £7,350.
“Staffordshire is the home of The Potteries and ceramics collectors scour auctions for finds. In March a large, rare Victorian Minton majolica centrepiece depicting mermaids holding up a scallop shell achieved £5,000. It made big news, particularly as its former West Midlands owner used it to store tights!
“Whatever you have at home I would love to see it. If the estimate appeals, you can consign your item to auction there and then.”
