Dr Richard Halliday, an expert on early English pottery and continental porcelain, is bringing his wealth of knowledge to Hansons to help clients gain exceptional ceramics advice.
Dr Halliday, a ceramics researcher, publisher, valuer and authority, will be offering free valuations at Hansons’ headquarters in Derbyshire and at its country house showroom, Bishton Hall in Staffordshire, throughout the year.
He will be at Hansons Auction Centre, Heage Lane, Etwall, Derbyshire, DE65 6LS, 10am-1pm, on: February 28, March 27, May 1, June 5, July 3, July 24, August 28, September 25, October 23, November 20.
He will be at Bishton Hall, Wolseley Bridge, Staffs, ST17 0XN, 10am-1pm, on: February 13, March 12, April 3, May 14, June 11, July 10, August 13, September 10, October 9, November 12, December 7.
Dr Halliday, Hansons’ curated ceramics consultant, specialises in objects from 1500-1900 including early English pottery and porcelain and continental porcelain including Meissen and Sevres.
He was awarded a PhD by Manchester Metropolitan University in 2018 in the field of History of Arts. He gives lectures in his specialist field of under-glazed transfer-printed ceramics at conferences around the world. For example, in October 2019 he spoke to the Transferware Collectors Club in Birmingham, Alabama, and to the San Francisco Ceramic Circle in California.
Family with antiques pedigree
His family has long been associated with antiques and can be traced back to the early 19th century. Both his great-grandfather and grandfather were antiquarian book dealers of some regard.
His grandfather could read and write in Latin, Greek and Sanskrit as well as the usual modern languages of English, German, French, Spanish and Italian. He had many famous customers around the world including America’s President Roosevelt.
Richard has written and published seven ceramics-related books, the most recent being, Chinoiserie, Printed Ceramics in the Chinese Style, 1750-1900. This 416-page reference work was co-written with fellow academic, Loren L. Zeller. This work examines the link between hand-painted Chinese-export wares of the 18th century and the growth of Britain’s ceramic industry from the mid-18th century to 1900.
Dr Halliday is a trustee of the Spode Museum Trust in Stoke-on-Trent, a registered charity. He is also a committee member of the Friends of Blue Society, which was founded in 1973 to study under-glaze blue transfer-printed decoration on pottery.
In addition, Richard is on the board of directors of the Transferware Collectors Club (TCC) and undertakes the role of Bulletin Editor. The TCC was formed in America in 1998 to promote, research and study transfer-printed ceramics made between 1760 and 1900.
He is currently working on his eighth publication, examining the role of the engraver in the transferware process.
