Discover dolls to delight and vintage teddy bears in September toy sale – further entries invited

 |  By Kendal Cooper

An exquisite doll from 1882 and Steiff teddy bears are among impressive lots consigned into September’s specialist toy sale at Hansons’ Staffordshire saleroom Bishton Hall.

Antique and vintage dolls, teddy bears and toys are achieving exceptional results in the auction centre’s regular sales and entries are invited.

Here, dolls and teddy bears consultants Janet Rawnsley reveals some of the top lots set to attract bidders in the September 19 auction. It features toys that delighted children from the late 1800s through to relatively modern-day finds.

Dolls to delight

We have a beautiful selection of French, English and German dolls, to include Jumeau, SFBJ, Steiner and early English wax models.

Dolls of note include an 1882 Bebe Parlant Automatique mechanical doll, a rare French Parisian walking and talking doll with original sheepskin wig, estimate £600-£900.

Collectors will also adore browsing a large collection of miniature bisque-head 19th century dolls house dolls, £100-£300 individually.

French Jumeau and SFBJ bisque-head dolls, many with original clothes, are on offer at £400-£800 together with beautiful 19th century Pierotti wax dolls.

Teddy bear bonanza

A large collection of bears include antique Steiff, Chiltern and Chad Valley plus post-Second World War, modern, boxed Steiffs and other special pieces. Of particular note is a 1908 Steiff, estimate £800-£1,200.

Toy inspiration

Moving to the toys and the interwar era, the September sale incudes some wonderful 0 larger gauge Bassett Lowke locomotives and carriages in original boxes, £300-plus, and Britains’ 1920s-issue garden shelter and greenhouse, below, in original black and white label boxes, £80-£120. These glorious pieces are seldom seen.

In the modern collectibles section – 1990s onwards – we have some good toy trade samples of ships made by Matchbox in 1:72. These large ships in display cases were made for a British Toy Fair as examples of construction. Handmade for Matchbox by Paul Richter, they are unique examples for a collector.

Also on offer are  Symposium Matchbox boxed cars, issued to key toy clients across the 1980s, Jaguar example shown below.

These unique, handmade painted models are sought after by Matchbox collectors, £60-£80 each.
