Studio pottery is now extremely desirable and this unusual ceramic sculpture is coming up in our May Fine Art Auction with a guide price of £8,000-£12,000.
That’s because it was made by world-renowned artist Andrew Lord, who was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, in 1950. Best known for his ceramics and drawings, Lord is now based in New York.
He studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London and his early influences were artists from the north – Henry Moore, painter LS Lowry and poet Ted Hughes.
This studio ceramic sculpture in the form of a single-handled jug was hand-modelled by Lord. Called ‘Untitled Ceramics’, it was part of one of his iconic ceramic sculptural exhibitions. Standing 60cm tall, it’s decorated with a yellow glaze with gold applied to the rim.
Lord’s first sole exhibition, ‘Pottery’, was held in London in 1978. Today he is a highly-acclaimed and respected artist of global importance with his style echoing Cézanne, Monet and Picasso. Lord has exhibited at galleries and museums across the world including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Liverpool and The Royal Academy.
