Quality design and historical pedigree excite collectors and we’ve had many requests for more information on several lots displaying one or both of these characteristics. Here we reveal 5 lots stirring major interest.
Danish delight | Lot 83
If you’re familiar with the work of Georg Jensen, you will immediately understand why this bowl is sparking intense interest. This is a Danish silver Louvre centrepiece bowl, displaying a hammer finish with crimped rim on an openwork pedestal of leaves and berries. It’s post-1945 but the original design was created by Georg Jensen in 1912. Jensen (1866 -1935) is a legendary Danish-born silversmith
and founder of Georg Jensen which sells beautiful jewellery, cutlery and
objects for the home. The Louvre bowl is so called because the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at the Louvre in Paris acquired a bowl of this pattern for its permanent collection in 1914. Estimate £800-£1,200.
Wine Wonder | Lot 15
What a way to impress when you serve your wine. This George IV silver pedestal wine cooler, London 1823, is embossed with vine leaf decoration to the rim and acanthus leaf decoration below. The makers’ mark is CF, probably for Charles Fox. Est
£300-400.
Russian Beauty | Lot 43
Such exquisite decoration comes from Russia with love. This pair of Russian silver spoons, the stems cast with bears climbing a tree stump, together with a George V cylindrical hardstone and silver box, Birmingham 1912, are so elegant and beautiful. Est £60-£100.
Equestrian Heritage | Lot 47
Equestrian items are always sought after. This is a late Victorian silver stirrup cup, cast as a stag’s
head, with a gilt interior. The maker’s mark is T.S, London, 1892. A stirrup cup is a ‘parting cup’ given to guests. It is traditional drink to serve port or sherry at a meet prior to a traditional foxhunt. Est £3,000-£4,000.
German talent from a century ago comes to the fore in lot 81, an early
20th Century German WMF Claret Jug with silver plated detail. WMF was
originally called Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer, a metal repair
workshop. However, by 1900 they were the world’s largest producer and exporter of household
metalware, mainly in the Art Nouveau style designed in the WMF Art Studio under
Albert Mayer, a sculptor and designer, who was director from 1884 to 1914. The stunning object has a turquoise glass body
and features hand painted gold foliate and scroll decoration. Estimate
£300-£400.
