Here, Alan shares his passion for stamp collection:
My love and passion for stamps takes me back a few decades to my early schooling days at the age of six.
My father would take me to stamp fairs and auctions. I always remember my first auction, proudly holding my own bidding card under the watchful eye of my father sat beside me. He ensured I didn’t hold the card up too long .
My collecting interests have varied over the years. I began with Thematics and bird stamps, then as I grew into it I wanted to collect the same as my father.
As I went through my school years my parents would give me pocket money for doing little jobs this enabled me to fund my hobby .
At secondary school, and still having my pocket money, I had the choice of going out with mates or collecting stamps. A happy medium prevailed. I joined my friends on Saturdays but Sundays were devoted to home life and and stamps.
During the latter years of secondary school, career choices had to be made. I always wanted to work in the Post Office but I was a tad blinkered to imagine the Post office only sold stamps.
I had the interest in travel, sparked, I believe, by seeing pictures on stamps of lovely places. This led to a career driving coaches, initially in the UK and later and all over Europe.
In later life, stamps are still my passion. As well as collecting, I trade in stamps and this has vastly broadened my knowledge.
