Four of Britain’s best known TV antiques experts are winning rave reviews for their their first-ever UK stage show – and promise a night to remember in Devon.
After decades spent working together on some of Britain’s best loved television series, Charlie Ross, Charles Hanson, Christina Trevanion and Philip Serrell have joined forces to share anecdotes galore.
In no-holds-barred stage show, Talking Antiques and a Little Bit of Nonsense, the four auctioneers share secrets of the antiques world, and themselves.
The show comes to The Landmark, Ilfracombe, on June 25. It’s the final date in the inaugural tour and the stars want to make it extra special.
Charles Hanson said: “We’re having an amazing time touring together. It’s something new for us all and, I confess, I have been nervous. However, the response from our audiences has blown us all away.
“We have been touched by the reviews, too. For example, famous broadcaster Gyles Brandreth tweeted out that ‘the Fab Four of the world of antiques’ were ‘brilliant bargain hunters and natural entertainers’.
Another reviewer said, ‘Quite simply the best entertainment we have been to in years! I simply didn’t stop laughing out loud and giggling for the entire performance’.
“Feedback like that, together with some sell-out audiences, has been so encouraging an autumn tour is now planned. However, our Devon date is the final show in the inaugural tour and we want to make it special, a night of fun, laughter and celebration.
“Charlie, Philip, Christina and I have got to know each other well over the last 20 years through our mutual love of antiques. We all gained the opportunity to work together on various antiques-related TV shows. Thankfully the great British public like ancient things too – me included.
“Antiques fans have Philip Serrell to thank for this stage show idea. It came about after a few of us went out on a karaoke night! Don’t worry, though, there’s no karaoke in the show. But I can promise a barrel of laughs, behind-the-scenes snippets, bloopers, antiques confessions and personal revelations about all of our lives that may take people by surprise.”
Charlie Ross, a renowned vintage and collectable car auctioneer, said: “The audience get to know the background of our lives and how we started in the business. For me, it was simply by chance. I was supposed to be a dentist.
“We’re certainly not short of interesting and humorous tales from the auction rooms, and, of course, from our lives in front of the cameras. I have lots of tales to tell from auctions I have conducted round the world including the USA, India, South Africa and Monaco. And I’m not afraid to reveal the cock-ups I have made over the years!”
