Vintage designer watches can sell for thousands – got a windfall ticking away at home?

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Search through your drawers for unwanted – or forgotten – watches because vintage finds can sell for thousands at auction.

Designer makes are highly sought after by collectors and there’s time to consign items into Hansons Staffordshire Auctions’ Fine Jewellery, Watches and Silver Sale on July 7, 2023.

Mel Lee-Patrick FGA DGA, jewellery and silver lead at Bishton Hall, said: “The sale will be dripping in diamonds and stars a wonderful circa 1963 Rolex Explorer Super Precision gentleman’s wristwatch (below) with original paperwork. The piece was inherited by the vendors.

“With a low-profile case and a stainless steel bracelet, this watch has the classic vintage Rolex look many afficionados currently desire. Its estimate is £3,000-£4,000.

“With this piece consigned, this sale offers owners of fine watches the chance to showcase and sell their item alongside a pedigree timepiece. We welcome consignments of other prestige watches.”

“The Spring Bishton Hall Fine Jewellery sale featured a Rolex Explorer II, known to many collectors as the ‘Steve McQueen’ Rolex. It hammered at £12,000 and sold to an international buyer.

“The watch had been worn by the owner during his career as a mechanic but was later tucked away and lay forgotten in a drawer.  It wasn’t until a visit to the vendor’s home that the watch was uncovered by Hansons, unlocking a welcome windfall.

“The July sale will also feature stunning pieces of fine jewellery including a dazzling diamond brooch by Garrards, in its original case and fully refurbished.”
