Diamond Delight

This stunning gem was sought after at auction and it’s easy to see why. The top-selling item in April’s Antiques & Collectors sale was lot 132, a diamond and platinum gold ring. It achieved £1,900.

Jewellery, watches and silver consistently dominate the top 10 lots. They are in strong demand and prices often exceed estimates and expectations.

Vintage and antique jewellery is popular among collectors who like to swap and change items. They are also seen as good investment pieces.

Collector’s Piece

Period engineering and ingenuity tempts bidders and lot 2019, a good marine chronometer by George Hedger of 42 Great Sutton Street, London, achieved £1,900. No 4858, it boasted a 3 1/2″ silvered dial with maker’s name.

Fisherman’s Choice

Art and angling came to the fore in lot 3094, an oil on canvas painting of trout on a riverbank by Henry Leonidas Rolfe (1823-1881). It hooked £1,600. Period art and country pursuits are a popular combination when it comes to bidder appeal.

Paintings In Demand

More oil-on-canvas works to do well included lot 3090, a pair of paintings depicting of birds of paradise with fruit and flowers and a crane with fruit and flowers. Created in the manner of Jakob Bogdani (1660-1724), they achieved £1,300.

Floral art shone bring in lot 3089, a pair of oil on canvas late 18th/early 19th century paintings in the manner of Jan Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678). The still life works capture an abundant mix of flowers in a vase. They sold for £1,250.

The demand for period art also came to the fore in lot 3000, an elegant mid-19th century English School portrait of a gentleman. Unsigned, on canvas and relined and in an elaborate gilt frame, it made £800.

Stamps Deliver

Stamp collections often excel at auction and lot 3435, a vast collection held in eight boxes, achieved £1,200. It included a large quantity of Decimal mint face stamps in prestige books, albums and presentation packs.

Cherry Surprise

Necklaces, especially amber, often exceed all expectations at auction but lot 233 surprised us all. The cherry-type necklace, comprising graduated ovoid beads, soared to £1,000 from a £30-£40 guide.

Golden Day

Gold consistently excels and prices have soared in recent years. Lot 154, a fancy-link wide 9ct gold gate bracelet, width 35mm, with a fancy engraved padlock clasp, length 22cm, weight approx 64.9gms hammered at £950. Even broken gold jewellery can sell well at auction.
