Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier’s designer flair in demand at auction

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Designer flair comes to the fore this spring courtesy of Derbyshire’s own queen of fashion Dame Vivienne Westwood and Frenchman Jean Paul Gaultier.

An iconic black satin Westwood playsuit/loungewear set, size 14, 1993, is in Hansons’ March 30 Fine Art sale with a guide price of £500-£600 (lot 155). The satin-feel polyester top and shorts is stamped with the Vivienne Westwood orb emblem.

Vivienne, who died at the age of 81 in December 2022, was born in Tintwhistle in the High Peak. The English fashion designer and businesswoman was largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream. In 2022, Sky Arts rated her the fourth most influential artist in Britain in the last 50 years.

A man also known for shaking the establishment is Jean Paul Gaultier. The French haute couture and prêt-à-porter designer is described as an ‘enfant terrible’ of the fashion industry. He is known for his unconventional designs with motifs including corsets, marinières, and tin cans.

The same sale includes  a vintage satin/cotton Gaultier corset blazer with fitted waist, size 14, Euro size 42, made in Italy, as new. The item,  in its original cover, has a guide price of £400-£600 (lot 156).

Vintage designer fashions, bags, scarves and handbags are hot property at auction. To book a free fashion/textiles valuation email [email protected] or call 01283 733988.
