Here, Dr Richard Halliday, Head of Curated Ceramics at Hansons Auctioneers, shares details of favourite examples from the Arthur and Julia Roberts Collection of ceramic jelly moulds to be sold on July 29. Dr Richard Halliday says: “The Roberts started the collections in the early 1970s and have amassed superb examples across their chosen disciplines – blue and white transferware, jelly moulds and Art Deco ceramics. These were all beautifully displayed in a perfect setting at Coscote Manor, Oxfordshire. (below).
“The collection of jelly moulds consists of in excess of 400 examples and covers the early period of production with some super late 18th century creamware moulds through the ages and developments into the Victorian period.
“The mould genres are all well-represented with animals, shells, flowers, fruits, geometrics and much more. The famous and prominent makers are covered too with moulds by Spode, Wedgwood, Leeds, Davenport, Minton and Copeland.
Jelly moulds to admire
1. A selection of early creamware jelly moulds in the animal genre with a lion, bird and squirrel being depicted.
2. A group of early creamware moulds depicting the Price of Wales feathers, a wheat sheaf and a naval emblem.
3. An early creamware jelly mould in the form of a bunch of grapes.
