Star Lots in Successful Ceramics Sale at Bishton Hall

 |  By andy

Head of Ceramics, Dr Richard Halliday reports on the success of the sale held at Bishton Hall.

This sale was a single-owner collection of ceramics including early British transfer-printed pottery, earthenware jelly moulds and Art Deco ceramics. It was carefully and lovingly assembled by its owners, Arthur and Julia Roberts over five decades in the idyllic surroundings of leafy Oxfordshire.

Each item in each category was described in full, including dates, sizes, makers or attributions, patterns names and types and had a full condition report and comprehensive supportive high-quality images. This, along with exhaustive promotion was the key to its success.

Here are some highlights chosen by Dr Halliday:

A rare Swansea draining dish decorated with the Two Figures pattern, c.1795. It made a superb £500 hammer despite having some damage. Rarity and good presentation counts!

A Heathcote Cattle and River pattern, Cromford House, Derbyshire dough bin and cover, c.1825 sold for £540 hammer. The base had some restoration, but again, rarity and supportive descriptions ensured it success.

This group of early nineteenth century creamware jelly moulds depicting floral and fruit displays brought £210 hammer. It is so unusual to offer such a broad and comprehensive collection of these type of wares.

This highly-decorative Susie Cooper, Crown Works morning tea service brought an impressive £540 hammer. This set had competing telephone bidders on different continents, but was eventually bought by a collector in the UK.

If you have a collection of ceramics to sell and are looking for an auction house, then look no further than Hansons. This type of attention to detail in researching, cataloguing, describing, photographing and promoting is almost unique within the auction world and we are extremely proud of this and the fruit it bears.
