Could designer fashions in your wardrobe fund summer fun? Turn chilly winter days into auction treasure hunts

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Here, Hansons’ Textiles and Fashion consultant Virginia Ewart offers inspiration to turn unwanted vintage clothing and textiles into cash.

When you’re stuck indoors due to chilly winter weather it’s a perfect time to clear out your lofts and wardrobes and turn unwanted designer and vintage fashions and textiles into cash for home improvements or summer holidays.

In 2022 Hansons’ costume, textiles and vintage fashion sales held at the firm’s Staffordshire saleroom Bishton Hall witnessed some great successes.

If you are lucky enough to have any 1970s Ossie Clark dresses squirreled away, a ‘cuddly’ wrap style dress (main image) made £600 in our pre-Christmas sale, and in the September sale we were excited to find two early Laura Ashley dresses which hammered at £400.  Vintage Laura Ashley, above, is always a popular choice with our bidders.

Luxury scarves are something you may have stashed in a draw and never worn, and labels like Hermes, above, will get great prices. In September we had a few Hermes scarfs including a Drambuie design by Peter Ledoux which sold for £140.

One of our favourite textile finds was a hand-embroidered whitework bedspread with the dates 1918-1929 embroidered in the corner and an intricate design that included a rooted tree with hares and leaves. The vendor was very excited when it sold for £360, much more than we had anticipated.

We are currently looking for consignments for our March specialist sale, so if you have anything that you would like to bring along for valuation please call to book an appointment, or email [email protected]. Send some photos of your finds and we will be in touch!
