Double Diamond works wonders as anyone old enough to recall the famous beer’s 1970s advertising campaign will know.
Advertising is key to any brand which is why the name ‘Double Diamond’ adorns this mid 20th century vintage lamp pub sign for ‘The Bulls Head’. This classic lantern, which comes with an ornate wall bracket, is in Hansons’ December 13 Christmas Decorative Arts Auction, estimate £200-£300, lot 81.
For anyone looking to add a piece of brewing history to their home – or garden bar! -this is a wonderful reminder of Burton’s brewing heritage. Double Diamond Burton Pale Ale was first brewed in the East Staffordshire town as an English pale ale in 1876 by Samuel Allsopp & Sons.

Allsopp merged with Ind Coope in 1935 and bottled Double Diamond emerged. It was advertised heavily in the 1940s and became one of four nationally distributed beers by the 1950s.
A keg version was launched in the 1960s and, in the 1970s, it was advertised heavily by Ind Coope, especially on TV, with the tagline: ‘A Double Diamond works wonders’. It was one of the UK’s highest selling beers at that time.
It has been claimed that small-scale production of the bottled variant continued as it was the late Prince Philip’s favourite nightcap.
