Lockdowns and travel restrictions have made our homes more important than ever – and prompt us to invest in objects to deliver comfort and nostalgia.
People redecorated and transformed their homes like never before in 2020 in a bid to do something positive in lockdown and that trend looks set to continue as 2021 gets under way with lockdown number three.
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, said: “Auctions offer people the opportunity to find unusual or unique antique and vintage items to adorn their properties by shopping online from the comfort of their armchair. With yet more restrictions in place, demand and interest in our sales is expected to grow as people spend more times at home.
“It gives them time to reassess and feather their all-important nests – and do some online auction shopping. Home is where the heart is, and always has been. It is our castle and people take great pleasure in creating interesting and comfortable spaces, surrounded by objects they love.
“The desire to provide comfort amid a world in chaos has also prompted people to invest in quality objects from the past. I expect that trend to continue and areas of growth will include retro 1970s, 80s and 90s furniture – particularly teak. For that reason, vintage 20th century furniture may be worthy of investment along with iconic jewellery and designer watches.
“We also witnessed a surge in demand for vintage games consoles and games in 2020 and that trend will continue to flourish. I’m optimistic for 2021 for many reasons. Not only have auctions flourished in a global pandemic thanks to online-only sales, the nation’s passion for antiques has been reinvigorated by the focus on our homes and the comfort nostalgic objects bring.”
