The ultimate drunken lockdown find goes home

 |  By andy

By Adrian Rathbone, Head of Fine Arts, Hansons Auctioneers

With most us spending more and more time at home whilst the world is on ‘pause’, this can have some positive effects in that we are having more time to explore the depths of our own homes. In the non-stop routine of ‘normal’ life, one can often overlook treasures lurking under our very noses.

We are finding more time to clear out cupboards and attic space – we are all hoping for the ultimate lockdown find. Whilst most of will not find anything of any great worth, one lucky Warwickshire client discovered a hidden old master painting, although not quite a Rembrandt, rather a painting in the manner of Filippo Lauri. The client from the Stratford area discovered the old canvas languishing in their attic covered in dust and cobwebs.

Lauri was an Italian painter born in Rome in 1623 and lived until 1694. He worked in the Baroque period and in 1654 became a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. Well-known for his mythological subjects his works scattered throughout private and museum collections in Europe and North America.

The work, measuring 70 by 90cm, is unframed and decidedly poor condition. Not surprising for something over 300 years old. Though featuring many years of grime, tears and holes, the vendor decided they had better get it checked out and not disregard it as simply a worn-out old picture destined for the skip.

Entrusting it with specialists at Hansons, Head of Fine Arts Adrian Rathbone and consultant Andrew Bowyer came to the conclusion that it was in the manner of Filippo Lauri. It depicts a drunken Bacchus with satyrs and fauns. Bacchus can clearly be seen succumbing to the excesses of alcohol. It is not common for paintings of this period to be signed but there was strong indication in the handling of the subject that the work pointed to the hand of Lauri.

Despite the poor condition, it was estimate at £1,000-£1,500 in Hansons’ December 10 Bishton Hall Country House Auction. Pre-sale interest, saw it eventually sell for £2,500, (plus buyer’s premium) and, unsurprisingly, it was purchased by an Italian client based in Rome. The painting went home to its place of creation.

Ever wondered what your paintings may be worth? Be it old or newer, with values changing constantly it is more important than ever to be aware. Now you can find out – for free.
