Jewellery expert promoted to associate director at Hansons Auctioneers

 |  By andy

Jewellery specialist Helen Smith has been promoted to associate director at Hansons Auctioneers.

Helen, who joined Hansons as a general jewellery valuer at the firm’s Derbyshire headquarters in 2016, has risen through the ranks during a ‘busy and fulfilling five years’ at the company.

She was promoted to head of jewellery in 2019, a title she retains alongside associate director. She says she owes her success to the ongoing support and training provided by company director Charles Hanson.

Helen said: “I’m so grateful for all the opportunities Charles has given me – topped off by this major promotion. Thanks to him, I’m proud to be one of the growing community of women in a senior role in the antiques industry.

“When I started at Hansons I took a side step having previously working as a designer goldsmith in the retail industry. During this time, I built up a broad and extensive knowledge of modern jewellery, gemstones, design and manufacturing techniques and appraisal. I had no clear path but Charles recognised my passion for antique and vintage jewellery – and my strong desire to broaden my knowledge and field of experience.

“I have worked hard to deliver the best possible results for both clients and the business as a whole. It’s been a busy and fulfilling five years. The customers I have met along the way have reignited my passion for learning. As well as gaining a vast amount of experience in my area of expertise, my general knowledge of antiques and collectables has also increased.

“As I move forward as associate director at Hansons, I’m keen to further expand my knowledge of jewellery and antiques to benefit both the business and myself.”

Reward for dedication and hard work

Charles Hanson said: “I have watched Helen grow in stature over the years. She’s gained the respect of both clients and colleagues and is held in high regard. This promotion rewards her discipline, commitment and thirst for knowledge. I trust it will pave the way to even greater success.”

Helen BA (Hons) studied jewellery and silversmithing at the University of Central England in Birmingham and undertook an apprenticeship at Allen Brown Jewellery in Lichfield, Staffs, where she honed goldsmithing skills.

A jewellery designer and maker as well as a valuer, she gained a coveted place at the New Goldsmiths Centre in London, a leading UK charity for the professional training of goldsmiths which supports emerging talent.

One of only six people chosen for the course, she learned from top designers including Stuart Devlin, a silversmith to the Queen, Stephen Webster, David Marshall and Theo Fennell. Helen has exhibited at the prestigious Goldsmiths Fair in London and assisted in the creation of a brooch for Queen. She also makes bespoke designer jewellery to order.
