Rare antique corkscrew poised to turn helixophiles’ heads

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Helixophiles – corkscrew collectors – could have their heads turned by a gem in July’s Antiques and Collectors sale.

Lot 2157 is a rare 19th century Thomason-type, double-action vine barrel corkscrew. It features a turned bone handle and brush, the barrel being decorated with fruiting vines, hops, ears-of-corn and foliage. It incorporates a dusting brush, used to remove debris from wax used to seal the bottle. Formerly purchased from Christie’s in 1995, its estimate is £800-£1,000.

Being able to uncork a bottle of wine with ease is something we take for granted but we have Birmingham-born Sir Edward Thomason (1769-1849) to thank. On May 7, 1802, he patented an ingenious corkscrew. The mechanism incorporated both male and female threads and, by continually turning the handle clockwise, the cork was swiftly extracted.

Some 16 different Thomason corkscrew designs are known including rare variations. Sir Edward was so confident his invention was a winner, each patent badge applied to his corkscrews included the motto ‘Ne Plus Ultra’ meaning no more beyond. He thought his design could never be bettered and, 220 years later, I think he was right.

The corkscrew will be offered on July 18 in a three-day Antiques and Collectors Auction. Catalogue: www.hansonslive.co.uk. Entries invited for monthly sales. To arrange a free valuation, email [email protected] or call 01283 733988.
