Uncovered by Hansons’ antiques valuer Karl Martin, this eight-day longcase clock is by Derby’s own John Whitehurst (1713-1788).
Karl said: “Whitehurst was one of the world’s leading clock and barometer makers. He was years ahead of his time.
“As a scientist and member of the 18th century Lunar Society, a group of free thinking scientists and industrialists, he rubbed shoulders with people such as Joseph Wright, Derby’s greatest painter. They met up socially in some of Derby’s oldest pubs such as The Olde Bell in Sadler Gate, and Jorrocks, formerly The George, in Iron Gate.
“John Whitehurst died in 1788 and his son John Whitehurst jnr took over the business. He continued to build on his father’s great clock/barometer-making skills. Examples can be found at Derby Museum and Pickford’s House Museum in the city.”
The clock will be offered with an estimate of £500-£700 in Hansons Auctioneers’ June 30 Fine Art Auction. According to Karl, a Derby man passionate about the city’s heritage, it’s a bargain with rich historical significance.
