A rare Lalique brooch which is more than 120 years old is destined to sell for tens of thousands of pounds in Hansons’ Spring Fine Art Auction.
The enamel and diamond Hedera Helix – common ivy – brooch dates back to circa 1900 and its discovery has thrilled Head of Fine Art Isabel Murtough. Such is its importance, the nature-inspired piece will be guided at £35,000-£40,000.
Prodigious talent René Lalique (1860–1945) began his career as a jewellery apprentice at the age of 16. By 1881 he was a freelance designer for many of the best Parisian jewellers. In 1885 he opened his own workshop in Paris and within a decade he was one of the city’s most highly regarded jewellers.
This brooch demonstrates his talent. The naturalistic design features ivy six leaves, big and small, their curving stems filled with diamonds. Ivy symbolises foreverness, eternity, faith, commitment, loyalty and affection towards a partner or friend
