Bidders from all corners of the globe competed to buy rare antiques in Hansons’ Curated Ceramics and Glassware Auction on December 8, 2021.
Hansons’ Head of Ceramics expert Dr Richard Halliday, said: “The sale was a huge success. It sparked keen bidding for some incredibly rare Spode blue and white transfer-printed wares.
“The battle on Hansons’ two internet bidding platforms and via the telephones was intense for some of the choice pieces. They were consigned from pioneers of transferware and included the Moore and Kentish collections.
Sale highlights (hammer prices) included:
Lot 281: An early 19th century blue and white transfer-printed Spode Caramanian series large hash dish and cover, c. 1810. It is marked to the underside. 43 cm wide. Sold for £1,000
Lot 284: An early 19th century blue and white transfer-printed Spode Indian Sporting series dessert dish, c. 1810. It is marked to the underside and printed with Hunting a Hog Deer. 26 cm wide. Sold for £900
Lot 285: An early 19th century blue and white transfer-printed Spode Italian well and tree platter with rare Calx mark, c. 1816. It is marked to the underside and printed with the rare mark: This Blue-ware is printed from Calx of British cobalt produced from Sparnon Mine in the county of Cornwall, August 1816. 52 cm wide. Sold for £950
Lot 228: An early 19th century blue and white transfer-printed Willow pattern cheese cradle, c. 1820. It is printed with a sheet pattern to the underside and stands upon four lion-paw feet. 43 cm wide. Sold for £360
Lot 236: An early 19th century blue and white transfer-printed Spode Botanical series large footed bowl, c. 1828. It is printed with a botanical specimen and is marked to the underside 28 cm wide, 14 cm tall. Sold for £300
