A train enthusiast’s lifetime collection of treasured railwayana could sell for £10,000 at auction in December.
The colossal collection, which includes hundreds of model locomotives by Hornby, Bachmann and Lima, was gathered by Alan Renwick (1928-2019) over several years in retirement.
Mark Holder, railwayana expert at Hansons Auctioneers, said: “Alan was born into a mining community in North East England. He showed an interest in model making and trains from an early age, partly inspired by his father who worked with coal wagons underground.
“However, it wasn’t until Alan retired from his job as a clerk that he able to fulfil his ambition to build his own track, initially on the dining room table. The collection grew, eventually filling the spare bedroom which became ‘The Railway Room’. His family tell me that he spent many happy hours there building and maintaining his layout.
“Although favouring engines, coaches, carriages and wagons from the steam age, he also added more recent diesel and electric models to his collection.
“Over the years, family members were given railway-related items as birthday and Christmas gifts. They have inherited some of Alan’s layout, engines and rolling stock and would like it to bring pleasure to others.”
