A vintage gem coming up in our November 2 Music and Film Memorabilia Auction is a Wurlitzer jukebox, believed to be circa 1970s.
Lyric model number 3084860, it contains up to 56 singles featuring The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, T-Rex and more. It’s in reasonably good condition and powers up but will require a service and, perhaps, repairs due to its age. Its estimate is £200-£300 (lot 1) but pre-auction bids have surpassed that figure.
Coin-operated music boxes date as far back as 1890 when Louis Glass and William S. Arnold invented the nickel-in-the-slot phonograph in San Francisco, USA. These progressed over time as musical passions inspired inventions.
The word ‘jukebox’ emerged in America in 1940, derived from ‘juke joint’ meaning disorderly or rowdy. In 1950, the Seeburg Corporation introduced 45rpm vinyl record jukeboxes. As 45s were small and light they became the dominant jukebox media for the latter half of the 20th century.
