7 amazing things you can buy at one-off antique furniture auction of HUNDREDS of items

 |  By andy

Furniture lovers have the chance to transform their homes in August thanks to a one-off auction of hundreds of items.

More than 200 pieces of furniture, many with no reserves, and scores of pictures, will be sold at a special Antique Furniture Auction, 17th Century Oak to 1930s Art Deco Walnut, and Gallery Auction of Paintings on Wednesday, August 8 at 1pm.

The items will go under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers, Heage Lane, Etwall, Derbyshire, and business owner Charles Hanson says it is an amazing opportunity to buy antique and vintage furniture at affordable prices.

He said: “Anyone looking to buy something that will make their home stand out from the crowd should take the time to browse the catalogue or join us to view on Saturday, August 4.

“There’s something to suit every budget. We have antique furniture from the reign of Charles II and the 17th Century to stylish Art Deco walnut furniture, plus a wide array of prints, watercolours and oil paintings.”

Among hundreds of lots up for auction are

  • George III dresser with rack which dates back to 1770. As well as being a beautiful antique, it is hugely practical and would suit a farmhouse kitchen perhaps. Its estimate is £300-£400.
  • Oak writing bureau dating back to 1720 with splendid interior awash with cubby holes and secret compartment. Estimate £100-£150.
  • Among items of bedroom furniture a linen press, circa 1830, estimate £150-£200. Large and solid, it would provide ample storage.
  • There is also a wide range of walnut veneer furniture including a 1920s corner display cabinet which has an estimate of £80-£120. It’s snug enough to fit in any home.
  • There are scores of chairs too, from dining chairs to armchairs and leather chesterfields. One pretty-in-ink armchair shows wear and tear but you can immediately imagine it in the drawing room of a stately home. Estimate £60-£80.
  • A set of striking leather armchairs, with button detail, are also in the sale and will be sold in pairs. “Aged leather is always sought-after for its look and the fact that it lasts so long,” said Charles. Estimate £300-£400 per pair.
  • Planning for Christmas yet? If you have a large family – and house – then two splendid dining tables might be perfect for your festive celebration. They will certainly impress your guests with their provenance. The pair of large, Italian design, mahogany-topped refectory tables, late 19th/early 20th Century, are from London’s Two Temple Place, a neo-Gothic mansion completed in 1895. It was once home to William Waldorf Astor, a wealthy American attorney, politician and newspaper publisher who moved to England in 1891. They have an estimate of £7,500-£8,500.
