 |  By andy

Here, Dr Richard Halliday, Head of Curated Ceramics at Hansons Auctioneers, picks out some of his favourite pieces from the Arthur and Julia Roberts Collection of blue-printed wares to be sold on July 29-30, 2020. Please check Hansons website for a fully-illustrated online catalogue which will go live in July.

1. A Pountney and Allies, Bristol Pottery blue-printed plate decorated with the arms of Bristol, c.1825. The motto “Virtute et Industria”, translates as ‘By Virtue and Industry’.

2. A John and Richard Riley blue-printed plate decorated with the Arms of the Worshipful Company of Drapers, c.1825. The motto reads; “Unto God only be honour and glory”.

3. An extremely rare Spode “India” pattern plate, c.1816. To the reverse, it has the addition of the ‘Blue Calx’ mark that signifies the location that Spode bought the cobalt colour to produce these wares. This mark is seldom seen.

4. A set of extremely fine shell-edge child’s plates, c.1820, above. These type of plates were used as gifts for good children and were often used as teaching aids.

5. A pair of “Willow” pattern plates, below, attributed to George Jones. Yorkshire Relish was produced by Goodall, Backhouse & Co. of Leeds and their advertising material described it as ‘The most delicious sauce in the world’.
