Sports memorabilia is in hot demand at auction and items related to football are among the most sought after.
Here, Head of Sports Memorabilia David Wilson-Turner picks out three lots already consigned into Hansons’ May 17 Football in Focus & Sports Memorabilia Auction.
Calling Barcelona Fans

Love Spanish football, especially Barcelona? This football has been signed by FC Barcelona players who took part in the 1983 Copa Del Rey final against Real Madrid in Zaragoza. Some signatures are faded, however Diego Maradona and Pedro Maria Artola are among clearer ones. The ball, estimate £500-£800, was given to the vendor by his friend’s grandfather when he played for a youth team in Spain.
Celebrating Stanley Matthews

The same sale offers a hallmarked silver salver bearing the inscription, ‘Presented to Sir Stanley Matthews CBE by The Players of Hibernians Football Club Malta on the occasion of the Club Success in the Trophy Competition Season 1969-70’, estimate £500-£800. Items connected to Matthews (1915-2000), the Stoke-born football legend, spark strong interest.
Match-worn Villa shirt

Aston Villa fans can bid on a 1992-93 home football shirt, believed to be worn by former Villa defender Steve Staunton, £250-£350.
